Class Placements / First Day of School

To support our transition back to school, families will be receiving classroom teacher information at the end of this week prior to the start of school. Please know that class placements continue to be tentative due to ongoing registrations and evolving enrolment. We will require patience, flexibility, and understanding on behalf of our students and families. Working together as a home-school partnership will allow for a positive school start-up. Staffing and classroom changes are directed by the Board office and this process may occur during the first two weeks of school which could lead to classes being revised. Our staff takes great care in considering all students’ needs when creating class placements.

Tuesday, September 6th is the first day of school for students in Grades 1-8. Kindergarten students have a staggered entry and communication will come directly from the FDK classroom teacher. On the very first day of school, Gr. 2-8 students will be meeting their classroom teacher on the asphalt at the back of the schoolyard. Grade 1 students will meet their teacher in the kindergarten gated area for the first day (only). We kindly ask that parents and guardians stay in the drop-off/pick-up area and do not accompany your child(ren) in the schoolyard. In order to keep all students safe, we will have many staff that will greet and support your child(ren) with where they need to go. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Please know that WCDSB Learning Kits are not being provided, however the school will provide the necessary school supplies for students. All families are encouraged to provide indoor and outdoor shoes and a reusable water bottle.

Looking forward to a year filled with new opportunities to learn and grow in community together.

Welcome Back ~ September 6, 2022

We hope your summer was an opportunity to relax, and recharge and that everyone is now ready to start a new school year! We are delighted to have such an amazing Haller Hawk learning community. We are so excited to welcome everyone back to school next Tuesday, September 6th, and to see the familiar smiles once again in our hallways, classes, in the schoolyard, and also meet new friends! We remain dedicated to providing a quality Catholic education rooted in fostering a sense of community and belonging, nurturing responsible students, and promoting high expectations in learning. We welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education too, and we look forward to working with you and your children. Our skilled and devoted staff are planning and preparing for our new school year!
You may have heard the wonderful news as our Waterloo Catholic District School Board will ‘welcome back’ our new Director, Mr. Tyrone Dowling. As a former WCDSB Principal, we are excited that his leadership will once again benefit the staff and students of our school communities.

Our school office officially opens this week. We welcome Ms. Elle Bridge as our new Administrative Assistant who will greet you when you call or stop into the office starting Tuesday, August 30th.  If you are in the registration process, please make sure that all forms are completed online and all necessary documents are uploaded.  If you are uncertain of the status of your child’s registration, please do not hesitate to contact the main office.

We are committed to providing our families with as much information as possible.  This begins today with our first “News from the Nest” update for 2022-2023. Please visit our school website and sign up for our school Newswire to ensure you receive important information and updates.

The health and well-being of our students, families, and staff will continue to be our first priority. Our school board is always working closely with Waterloo Region Public Health and following the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer. We will ensure health and safety protocols are in place and followed so that our students and staff can enjoy a safe and healthy learning environment this year. At this time, masks will not be mandatory for students, staff, and visitors in schools, or on student transportation. Since masking is optional and some individuals may choose to wear, or not to wear a mask within their school communities we strongly encourage everyone to be respectful of individual choices. It is still recommended that staff, students, and visitors continue to self-screen every day before attending school using either the COVID-19 school and child care screening tool and everyone should stay home if they are feeling ill to prevent the spread of illness.  We will continue to teach and model appropriate hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Hand sanitizer will continue to be provided and hand washing encouraged and integrated throughout the school day.

We are excited to meet and welcome our Haller Hawk students for an exciting school year ahead.

IMPORTANT – Student Transportation Update

ATTENTION: WCDSB families and students who qualify for transportation through Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR):

This is an important update regarding the start-up of transportation services this September.

Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) plans and contracts for transportation for WCDSB students who qualify for these services.  The software used by STSWR to support their activities is hosted on servers managed by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB).  WRDSB was recently the victim of a cyber attack which caused disruption to their information systems including STSWR’s software.

As a result of the disruption, route planning for schools in the Region was delayed.

With thanks to the staff at STSWR, most transportation services and routes will run as expected on the first day of school – September 6, 2022.  There are some exceptions as outlined below:

Delayed Start to Student Transportation

Transportation Services Starting on Monday, September 12, 2022

Students who are assigned to small or adapted vehicles (vans and small yellow buses) will have transportation service begin on September 12th.

This includes the following bus routes:
  • All bus routes from 700 to 723
  • All bus routes from 800 to 862
  • All bus routes from V01 to V39
  • All bus routes from W01 to W45

Transportation Services Starting on Monday, September 19, 2022

Any student/family who has changed their address in June, July, or August will have their transportation service begin on September 19th.

Families can visit the STSWR website beginning on Monday, August 29, 2022 to find their students’ transportation route information.

Please contact Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) at 519-744-7575 with any questions about this information.
