School Activities / Reminders

Tomorrow is Rowan’s Law Day in which we will have discussions to raise awareness about concussions and learn how to stay safe and healthy. We likely have all bumped our heads or body! In sports and active games, there can be risks involved. Rowan’s Law was passed in Ontario in honour of Rowan Stringer and also helps people who get concussions recover. All schools in Ontario must have rules in place to support awareness and help coaches, teachers, and parents know when a child has suffered a suspected concussion. It also lets the child know that they should immediately stop participating in physical activities and when they may safely return to play again.

On Thursday September 30th, we will also observe the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) and recognize, remember and honour First Nations, Metis and Inuit families and communities. It is a show of support and understanding of the history of the Residential school system that impacts many First Nations, Metis and Inuit people today.  Wear ORANGE on Thursday!

We also look forward to meeting our families at the (Outdoor) Meet the Teacher Event Thursday, September 30 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Please refer to an earlier communication for your allotted timeslot to ensure Health and Safety protocols can be maintained.

On Friday, October 1st, we are walking/running for Terry Fox!  Please come to school ready to participate and raise money and awareness for Terry Fox’s plight for cancer research.

RE: Anaphylaxis

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We felt that all parents would like to be aware that there are staff and students in our school with a severe life-threatening food allergy (anaphylaxis) to peanuts and tree nuts. This includes any food that contains peanuts/nuts in it. This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to specific foods and can result in death within minutes.

All our staff have been made aware of this situation and have been instructed in the correct procedures regarding anaphylaxis.

Prevention, of course, is the best approach. Although this may or may not affect your child(ren)’s class directly, we want to inform you products that contain or ‘may contain’ peanuts or tree nuts are not to be brought into the school. In a school setting, cross-contamination is the greatest risk for this type of allergy. Trace amounts of peanuts/nuts can be left on gym equipment, computer keyboards, learning tools, etc.

Waterloo Catholic District School Board is requesting that parents do not send their children to school with look-a-like products to peanut butter such as “WOWBUTTER”, “PEABUTTER” and “SUNBUTTER” in sandwiches. It is impossible to differentiate between these products and peanut butter; in fact, these products are almost identical in colour, consistency, smell and taste to peanut butter.

We endeavour to make the school a safe environment for all students. Anyone wishing further information about anaphylaxis may contact the school.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Cathy Kuntz

Principal

The Umbrella Project ~ 2021-22

Monsignor Haller School is excited to continue implementing The Umbrella Project skills with students this year. The Umbrella Project is dedicated to helping families better navigate the ups and downs of life while building the important skills that help us thrive in all types of weather. We call these skills Umbrella Skills because much like an umbrella, they help to protect us when life is rainy and challenging. We want children to feel empowered in all kinds of weather instead of spending their lives trying to avoid the rain.

Please take 2 minutes to watch this quick video that will help you understand how your child’s wellbeing grows and develops through practice

Each month we focus on providing practical parenting and classroom tools to build a different skill that the research shows us is an important piece of our umbrella of wellbeing. We are excited to provide you with lots of options and ideas to support these important skills at home. We recommend you choose the ideas that fit best with your unique family. Parenting energy is precious and we really can not do it all. What we can do is recognize our children’s strengths, the holes in their umbrellas and the parenting tools that will best help us support them as individuals to become stronger and more resilient in the face of life’s challenges.

Watch this video from Dr. Jen as she welcomes you to the Umbrella Project

Looking forward to a great year!

Good Afternoon Parents/Guardians

Please know that we continue to implement COVID-19 Health and Safety protocols (including wearing a mask, hand hygiene, and social distancing) to keep students, staff and families safe.  All families are kindly requested to complete the COVD-19 school and child care screening each day prior to sending your child to school.  Families are no longer required to complete the Attestation indicating that the school screener has been completed. This was a temporary measure that was completed on September 17th. Much thanks for your cooperation in completion of this Attestation.

The electronic link for the COVID-19 School Screener is essential to guiding parents/guardians regarding whether or not to send their child to school or if a COVID-19 test is required to keep our entire school community safe. In addition, the symptoms that are identified and the scenarios surrounding COVID-19 continue to evolve and this link will provide the most recent guidance from Public Health.

Staff will be vigilant throughout the day with students and report any student who shows symptoms of being unwell with the Covid-19 virus. The student will be escorted to the office and supervised at the main office until a parent can come to the school.   Siblings will also be required to leave school. Every family must have a plan to pick up an unwell child(ren) in a timely manner.

Parents will then be encouraged to contact public health, have the child tested, and follow public health directives. The child and siblings will be able to return to school once we get medical clearance.

Please know that while some symptoms are considered related to COVID-19, children may also exhibit other symptoms of illness that will require that they remain home until their symptoms have subsided.  Being at school while wearing a mask may be very uncomfortable and unpleasant due to some symptoms. Students may only return to school once symptoms have subsided for 24 hours.

We thank you in advance for your continued partnership in keeping all within our school community safe and healthy. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the school.

In partnership,

Mrs. Cathy Kuntz

Principal: Monsignor Haller CES
