Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

What a beautiful week we had this week!  The yard was covered in snow, the sun was shining and kids were busy building creations.  It felt almost back to normal – and for many students they thought it was ‘normal times’; forgetting about the reality we are in with the priority being safe behaviour.

Many reminders were given this week – for things students should already know: to stay 6 feet apart, to keep masks on, to leave the snowballs on the ground, that there are no kings in this castle, and students are to be completely hands off.

Reminding your child about the school protocols, including COVID protocols for all of our health & safety is much appreciated.  Ongoing reminders for hands on & unsafe behaviours will result in phone calls home and a conversation with a guardian to clear up any confusion around Health & Safety protocols, in hopes that safer decisions are chosen while at school.  Apologies if we must disturb you at home or work moving forward.

Reporting Illness from School

Good morning Hawks,

As per the summary regarding COVID protocols at school, if/when calling your child in ILL from school, please describe the symptom and let the office know which of the following you will seek:

-a COVID test

-going to the doctor or

-self-isolating your family

The self-assessment must be completed every morning – and this is the direction for you to follow.

A reminder that if one of your children has a COVID symptom ALL siblings from the school must stay at home as well.  Please see the attached for more information:  COVID Updates to WCDSB Parents Feb 22nd 21

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

Tanya Hunter

NEW* COVID Protocols: Letter from Our Director

Good evening Hawks,

There are new COVID related protocols for students in our WCDSB school.  Please read the new updated information carefully.

Most importantly, families must complete the self-assessment on the Ministry website before coming to school each day. This has not changed and this is what the school will be referring to in terms of students feeling unwell at school.

Pink Shirt Day!

Hey Hawks,

Don’t forget to wear PINK on Wednesday:

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007.

A student at a school in Nova Scotia was teased for wearing a pink polo shirt to school. The next day, students at the school all wore pink shirts in solidarity and support for him.

Pink Shirt Day is now celebrated as a way to spread kindness and acceptance. On Wednesday, February 24 everyone across the Waterloo Catholic District School Board is encouraged to wear pink to promote a message of inclusion.

Wear pink on Wednesday, Hawks, and let’s start the beginning of Lent with a message of kindness and love.

Gathered to Become!

Good morning Hawks!

Exciting news!  The butterfly has emerged from its cocoon!  It has spread its wings and is on full display in our foyer.

It is great that our butterfly was ready to emerge from the protection of its chrysalis – some of us may not be there yet, and that is okay!  When we are all ready to emerge and spread our wings, we will!  The “Becoming” butterfly is here to remind us that although we are not physically “gathered”, we are still together – as a class, as a school, and as a community – and God is asking us “Who do you want to BECOME?”  There have been activities this week that deal with the theme of the butterfly and personal reflection.

Yesterday, our students in junior/intermediate engaged in a Google Meet to take a look at the St. John’s Bible.  The talk focused on “Bugs in the Bible”.  We were so happy to have Mr. John Murphy from the WCDSB able to lead us through this amazing, handwritten, and illustrated Bible.  What a special event!  For more information and some pictures of the Bible, please visit: https://saintjohnsbible.org/

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

This week marks the most important season in our Catholic faith: Lent.

Tuesday’s Shrove Tuesday moved into Ash Wednesday with all students celebrating in a virtual liturgy.  Although we were unable to mark ourselves the traditional way with ashes, we used the time to reflect on the meaning of Ash Wednesday and how we will celebrate for the next 40 days until Easter.

Next week, our staff and students (grades 2-8) will participate in a guided meditation and examination of conscience to continue with our reflection in preparation for Easter.  Our hope is that we fully prepare our hearts during the Lenten season with personal Lenten Promises.

Families are encouraged to take a look at the link below and engage in your own Lenten activities as well.  Diocese of Hamilton | Ash Wednesday at Home (hamilton diocese.com)

Weather Impacted Learning Days (bus & school cancelation)

Please know that we do our best to keep our students safe during the coldest winter months.  As such, we continue to follow our board policy and if the temperature is between -16 and -19 we will only be heading outside for a maximum of 20 minutes.  Once the temperature dips to -20 or below, we will remain indoors for recesses.  There are still students showing up without hats or mitts/gloves and we would encourage all of our students – even those in grade 8 – to dress warmly.  If you have needs in the area of winter wear, please contact the main office and we may be able to help out.

If the weather is extremely “wintery” and busses are canceled, the schools will also be closed for the day.  In the event of what we used to call a “snow day”, we will now have an “adaptive learning day”.  Students will be provided activities and tasks via their Google Classroom.  There is no expectation of a live whole-class meeting on these days.  We have collected computers back from students for use at school and we are not expecting each child to have a device – just access to one so that they can view the work assigned.

Friday, February 19th – Term 1 Reports go home

WCDSB Updates:

Asymptomatic Testing: You may have heard on the news that schools will begin asymptomatic testing as early as next week.  The plan for exactly what this looks like is still being developed and when we get more information and a clear understanding, we will share it all with you.

UV Air Filters:  Air filters have been installed at Monsignor Haller in each classroom.  These filters are essentially a fan and a UV light.  The fan circulates the air in the classroom past the UV light eliminating contagions in the air.  It is another tool in the effort to keep everyone safe and healthy but please know that masks are still mandatory.

Recognizing that nerves are fraying and frustrations growing in the face of having to live with COVID-19, the public sector institutions of the Region of Waterloo (Public Health / School Boards / Municipalities / Hospitals / Universities-Colleges, WRPS, etc.) have banded together in a special multi-lingual “In This Together” campaign to promote kindness, tolerance, understanding and — most importantly – cooperation, as we continue to weather this storm.

Please see the attached InfoSheet for information: In This Together Roll-out Infosheet

Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday.  We are also celebrating the pastoral theme Gathering to become by displaying the chrysalis and butterfly at our altar table.  The symbols that we will use to represent this theme are the chrysalis and butterfly.

Currently, the chrysalis is hanging in our foyer, representing a safe and secure environment for a caterpillar to develop into a beautiful butterfly.  We too need to be in our own environments, to ensure the safety and security of all.  While we are in our safe and secure environments, we ARE developing.  We are learning, we are adapting and one day, we will emerge stronger

The Butterfly that is hanging in our foyer as well represents us as changed individuals.  We will emerge from our cocoons ready to spread our wings and fly!

This week each class will be focused on a variety of activities about Butterflies as well as a variety of reflective activities.  As a family, think about how our theme of “Gathered to Become” can connect to our current situation.

How can we feel connected to others given the limits of how we can “gather”?

What does “gathering” look like these days?

What is it that we want to “become”?  A good person?  More caring? Dedicated?

How can we work at “becoming” the person that God wants us to be?  That we want to be?

Things are different these days, but we are always a part of the Monsignor Haller community and we are always “Gathered to Become!”

Typically, we would gather in the gym for Ash Wednesday, share a liturgy with the parish team and offer ashes to all of our students and staff.
This year, being anything but “typical”, we will still mark this special occasion with a virtual liturgy from Mrs. Hunter and a reflection about ashes.  It is still the beginning of Lent and our journey towards Easter.  We are still called to make some Lenten Promises that make the lives of others a little better.

Please talk as a family this evening about the liturgy, your Lenten promises, and your plan to bring God’s world into action for others.
