February 1 to 5 2021 is #WCDSBPetWeek in Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools.

Good morning everyone!

February 1 to 5 2021 is #WCDSBPetWeek in Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools.

Throughout the week, we invite all students and staff to share on social media their pets and how their pets are helping them cope with COVID-19.

If your family doesn’t have a real pet, please feel free to create a “virtual” pet and share that …. or share a favourite stuffy.

Remember to use the hashtag #WCDSBPetWeek when you post.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

Do your kiddos need a screen break from time to time from remote learning?   We do too!

In light of the extension of at home learning, we will be moving to a ‘virtual’ event for Winter Walk to School Day.  Students and staff are asked to walk around the block, march on the spot or from room to room in their homes, or participate in any fitness movement on February 10th. We encourage families to tweet out their walk day photos and tag #WWDWR2021

#WinterWalkDay is the perfect opportunity for students to get outside and enjoy their journey to school. Walk to and from school improves physical and mental health, creates a healthier environment, safer streets, and opportunities to talk with friends! This year, we are holding an online event due to Covid restrictions. Once a student registers, they are entered into a draw for a $20 Indigo gift card.  Our school has been registered and participating schools can be entered to win a scooter rack.  Good luck everyone!

Students can register Here

School News:

I would like to take a moment to wish Monsieur Aljassem luck as he pursues a French assignment in the secondary panel.  Monsieur’s last day with the Hawks is Feb. 2.  Wishing you luck Monsieur!

Human Resources is conducting the hiring process to replace Monsieur until Mme Bester returns from her parental leave in May.  Filling positions has been a challenge board wide and I am hopeful students will receive French in the interim until Mme returns.

Report Cards:

Term One report cards will be sent home or mailed out on February 19th.  Students are aware that the assessment and evidence of learning collected and documented during this remote learning time will be reported on in this report card.  Students are encouraged to complete any outstanding assignments, hand in their best work and utilize the asynchronous time that teachers are available every day for review and help.

Grade 9 Registration:

Calling all Grade 8’s!  Can you believe you are moving on soon to high school?  The timelines will be communicated by St. Mary’s and then to us at Monsignor Haller.  Currently, your classroom teacher will be beginning the process for your course selections so they may be submitted to St. Mary’s in February.

In March, there will be a meeting with the principals and teachers at our school and St. Mary’s to make sure everyone’s information has been collected and received.  Other information such as HeadStart, Uniforms, and Transportation will all come through the classroom teacher and newswire.  Please be sure to read the notices as they come through.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

Our first three weeks of remote learning have been a success! Wow! We have adjusted the way in which we educate and learn these past weeks and the response from all partners in our school community has been nothing short of inspirational!

Three weeks of fully remote school days have brought BIG change – and as such, there have been a few hiccups along the way.  Our “Remote Learning – Best Practice Guide” details some of the ways students can find their best success with remote learning.  Some tips are as easy as “trying your best”, and turning your mic off when you join the meet…annnnnnd some of the more challenging practices, such as remembering when your camera is on, and finding an assignment in your  google folder.  Our educators will begin the day on Monday by reconnecting with our students after the PA Day and weekend, and sharing the guide.

Families are welcome to take a peek as well.  It is only 5 slides of info and a quick read!  Synch and Asynch – a Review of Best Practices! – Jan 2021

Sincere thanks to our parents and guardians for your help with our little ones and the technology. Hopefully it gets easier and your child gradually takes on the lead role with the technology.  As always, if you have any questions moving forward throughout the week, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.

Thank you for all you do, and for supporting our staff in your efforts at home.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

What a start to 2021! Together we accomplished two weeks of adjusting to new routines and technology to continue the learning journey for all.

A huge shout out to everyone for contributing to the success of Remote Learning!

To our wonderful Haller Students ~ Stay Engaged.  Keep logging into your class and putting forward your best efforts. Stay home, stay healthy, stay happy! We are so proud of you all and we look forward to seeing you each day online.

To our supportive Haller Families ~ Stay Positive.  We recognize it may be challenging to have kids learning at home while you may also be working, either from home OR out in the community. We appreciate your efforts too. Please remember to reach out if you have any questions or concerns

To the committed Haller Staff ~ Stay Confident. Your online classes are evolving daily and all your planning and preparation to teach synchronously online are evident in the quality of learning. Your efforts are recognized and appreciated.

If you experienced disruption yesterday in the Google Meets – things DID NOT work as planned! Websites and the internet DID NOT cooperate for us!  This WILL happen again!  We apologize!

So please, give the teachers patience as we troubleshoot these hiccups when they happen during remote learning.  When this happens the next time, students will know it may take a minute to get things back up and running.  And that will have to be okay.  Teachers do not control the IT behind the technology we are using.  Imagine how many households in our province, city, community are running on google and using wifi at the same time.  It will get overloaded from time to time.  Everyone ended up picking up right where the class left off, and so thank you for joining back into the meet when you were able.  #wegotthis

Google Meet Issues

Good morning hawks,

Google seems to be experiencing some widespread connectivity issues.

We are receiving many reports of lagging, inability to hear, and losing connections.

The WCDSB have reached out for supports and hopefully as the day proceeds the issues will get resolved.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Hawk’s News Update

Good afternoon everyone,

We are connecting with you to let you know that we are thinking of you. We understand that these times are exceptionally hard for parents with everything that needs to be juggled. Our staff are here to help so please do not hesitate to let your child’s teacher know if you need support. You can also call the office to talk with Mrs. Neves or Mrs. Hunter at the school. We are here for you!

We are sharing this link to make you aware of what the WCDSB is doing to promote wellness:

Mental Health & Well-Being (wcdsb.ca)

We know that all of our families are doing their very best to have their children connect to their virtual classroom daily and complete the work that is provided. Although we are still expected to account for all students twice daily through regular attendance procedures (as communicated in yesterday’s NewsWire message), we realize that we are not in normal times and that exceptions may need to be made. We simply ask that you communicate with us so we can work together to figure out the best way to support your family and your child’s learning.

Thank you for your continued support and for being such incredible partners in the education of your children!

Stay safe Hawks,

Mrs. Hunter
