Inclement Weather Days

Good afternoon Hawks,

While the first official day of winter is still a few weeks away, the early snowfall has given us pause to plan early for inclement weather and potential bus cancellations. As student safety and well-being is always our priority and given the unique and additional challenges that Covid19 presents (such as cohorting) there are important changes to our process when student transportation has been cancelled. For the 2020/2021 school year in the circumstance when transportation is cancelled due to weather and road conditions, all schools will be closed to both students and staff.

As each classroom teacher has established a Google Classroom, teachers will utilize their virtual learning platform to post work by 10am on the closure day. Students will be provided with asynchronous student work. The normal bell times will be followed to allow students to contact their teacher on the closure day either through the platform or through other appropriate means, such as email.

Thank you for everyone’s understanding and support as we continue to provide learning for our students.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

We are excited to welcome back our Pottery to Go annual event this coming week!  In keeping with COVID protocols, the school has coordinated with Pottery to Go for the teachers to provide the lesson and assist our students with their pottery creations.  This tradition is also being paid for by the school in hopes that all our students feel just a little bit more Christmas spirit leading up to the holidays!

Thank you to our families and our teachers who were able to connect virtually, or over the phone in collaboration of supporting your children at Monsignor Haller.  Learning over the past eight months has looked very different than what we have ever seen.  So far, everyone is hanging in there.  We are focused on academics and the well-being of everyone here so that we can stay healthy and continue to learn in the school.

Recently we have had a number of children come to the office everyday for masks and cups.

Please help your child to remember to bring their masks (at least 2 per day) to school each day (every student was provided with 3 masks from the WCDSB and the Ministry).  We no longer have children’s disposable masks to pass out.  Your child also needs a water bottle to stay hydrated everyday.  The drinking fountains are closed and they need to use the water bottle refilling stations with their own bottle.

Weekly Reminder: Please continue to go through the screening tool with your child(ren) before each school day: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ The link can also be found at the top of our school website. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to keep our school community safe!

Weekly Reminder: Tuesday’s are SPIRIT DAYS.  All staff and students are encouraged to wear Spiritwear or BLUE, GREY OR WHITE to show our school spirit!

It’s a beautiful day and the sun is beginning to peek out!  This is a reminder that today is a PD Day and there is no school for students today.  Staff all across the WCDSB will be engaged in our Spiritual Development professional activities.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

This week, we recognized “Anti-Bullying Week” through “Friendship Week!”.  Time in each classroom was spent discussing and celebrating people in our world, our city, and our community.

The week was centered on the Pastoral Theme: Gathered to Become: God wants us to follow the “Golden Rule” and treat others the way we would want to be treated; what does God want for each of us?

Each day, we focused on a different theme in the hopes that we can have a more clear understanding of what we are “Gathered to Become”.  We engaged in a school-wide meditation so that students could quiet their minds and listen for God; we reflected on what we can create in God’s world to make it a better place; we shared with peers outside of our close friendships; reflected on the people in our school community who we can count on; and we finished the week with a classroom activity around Friendship!

School News:

“Wow!  It is cold outside!”

We heard this a lot this week.  A. Lot.  Students are still going outside for 2 recesses and for the 40 minutes at lunch.  Teachers are also taking their classes outside at other points throughout the day.  This provides fresh air and a mask break for them.  Please dress for the weather!  It is definitely hat and mitt weather – even for the intermediates!

Physical Education:

As you know, our gym classes have been held outdoors so that students can have a mask break, run off their energy and play games.  Looking ahead at times when the weather is nasty, we will likely have more inclement weather recesses and gym classes.  Because we have a number of classes on the field in their cohorted recess zones, we will not be able to keep children socially distanced on the days the field is icy, muddy, wet etc., like previous years when we would have grouped students on the blacktop only.

This will apply to physical education classes as well.  We will do our best to keep students moving within the COVID protocols, however, we may see more children inside as the winter weather approaches.  Each classroom teacher will use their professional judgement throughout the day to ensure students are safe outside (cold temperatures, hail, ice will be monitored).

Progress Report Cards:

Just a reminder that Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences are scheduled for next week. Please confirm with your child’s teacher in you are unsure of the booking schedule.

The Big Three!

We are still focused on the BIG 3 at Haller to help keep us safe.  Wear your MASK, SANITIZE your hands, and keep your DISTANCE!  These three requirements have proven to be helpful so far and we hope that they will continue to help keep us safe and healthy.  We also want to open the conversation about “TOUCHPOINTS”.  What are some things that we can prevent ourselves from touching?  Try opening a door with your back as opposed to putting your hands on the handle!  Try it – and look for other areas that you can change your habits and touch less.

Upcoming Important Dates:

November 23: Faith PD Day (this is a Monday) (no school and NO Extended Day)

November 24-26: Interviews – telephone or virtual.  Teachers will be reaching out to families to schedule appointments.  Please check your Google Classrooms.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

This Wednesday November 11th, students were invited to wear red and black as a symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and hope.  Our students participated in a beautiful whole-school virtual Remembrance Day Service, observing a moment of silence at 11am. Let us all take some time to remember those who have sacrificed so much and be grateful for the freedom we have today!

Today is WORLD KINDNESS DAY! It is also our second THIS or THAT Day!  Today, we honour Mr. Rogers and encourage everyone to dress in either a CARDIGAN OR A TIE!

Progress Report Cards:

On November 20th your child is bringing home his/her Elementary Progress Report Card for the current school year.  The purpose of the Progress Report is:

Please note the WCDSB statement which will be found on all reports: “This reporting period reflects learning that has occurred in a modified learning environment as required by the provincial public health guidelines. As a result, the rate of progress described on this report card may differ from previous years due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on student learning. Ongoing communication with your child’s teacher will provide additional information pertaining to student progress throughout the term.”

We appreciate that fundraising during COVID will be tricky for all of us.  Many teams use Flipgive as a way to fundraise for their team uniforms, tournaments, etc.  School Council is hoping that with Flipgive, we can earn funds the same way, for the school for things you might already buy online for your family, without asking families to purchase additional items.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Monsignor Haller Catholic Advisory Council &
