Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Last week, the Minister announced that we would not be returning to school for the remainder of this year.  We are so sad to hear this news and we continue to hope for a quick resolution to the many safety issues that we have as a part of large gatherings.  Hopefully, things will return to “normal” for September.  Whatever the case, please know that we miss you all greatly and we can’t wait to get back to a point when we can gather, see your smiling faces and once again, begin to learn together!  Stay strong during the days and weeks until that can happen!  If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Remember, we still have 4 weeks left of school and we encourage you to continue engaging in your distance learning.  We want to ensure that learning can continue, so that when we are back to school, it is like we never left!  I realize it is a challenge with the current status of the school year, and the nice weather, but it is important!

As you know we are making plans for the pick up of personal items, drop off of school items (library books, text books etc.), the delivery of report cards and all of the other necessary items to wrap up this year and to start next year on the right foot.  As that information becomes available, we will share it with you on your child’s virtual Classrooms and Newswire.

Monsignor Haller Updates

Good morning Hawks,

These updates comes before tomorrow’s Friday Flash to ensure a streamlined message regarding school closure and next steps and a WCDSB announcement.

Here are a few updates from our school and from the Board:

Picking Up Students’ Personal Belongings and Returning School Items
We are starting to work on plans for the pick-up of students’ personal belongings and return of school items such as textbooks and library books. The following information will give you some idea of what can possibly be expected. We will communicate detailed instructions closer to the date.
  • We will schedule two days during the last week of June for the drop-off of school items and pick-up of students’ personal belongings. Students’ belongings will be organized in the gym by classroom, bagged and labelled and will include the final Report Card/Communication of Learning.  Staff will be on site to check you in and retrieve your bags for you
  • Families will be scheduled by surname alpha order and provide a time frame in which to come to the school. Families must come within the assigned time frame so we can ensure visits are spaced out.  Please be checking your child’s online learning platform for more information and these NewsWire alerts
  • Note: Grade 8 Graduates will be allotted a dedicated time frame to arrive, pick up belongings, receive their diplomas and a swag bag from the school
  • Families who have borrowed Chromebooks for distance learning will not be expected to return them in June – the exception being Grade 8 students or any other students who are leaving our school at the end of June
  • This ‘exchange’ process will happen at the exterior gym doors (on the backyard)
  • Any student or parent who comes to the school in June will be asked to come alone (only one person per family) and be required to sign off on receiving items
  • Our processes will align with recommendations from the Board, Ministry and Public Health and everyone who comes onto school property will be expected to follow the detailed instructions that will be communicated later (e.g., wearing gloves & mask if available, remaining 6 ft apart etc.)

WCDSB Schools to Mark Pride Month: June 1 – 30, 2020

For many years, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board has embraced the vision of Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools being “Heart of the community”, fostering “success for each” and creating “a place for all.”

To bring that vision to life, the WCDSB has prioritized equity, inclusion and belonging in the school board’s Multi-year Strategic Plan, as well as the board’s Pastoral Plan and Well-Being Plan.

As Catholics, we believe that we are wonderfully made in the image and likeness of a God who created us and loves us unconditionally – just as we are. We are called to love and celebrate one another, just as God loves and celebrates each one of us. We honour the inherent dignity in each other by treating one another with care, compassion, and respect.

The month of June is designated as Pride Month across the province of Ontario, and indeed much of Canada and the globe.  This month, and each and every month, our Catholic schools are committed to nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected.

We will promote this message throughout the month of June, and WCDSB will also fly the following flag for the entire month of June at each of its buildings and school locations.

We believe the message – We are all wonderfully made – We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19) captures a powerful message that we hope will resonate well in each of our school communities and across the broader Waterloo Region community.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

This week is another week of distance learning!  Please make sure that you continue to engage in the various learning activities posted by your teachers and if you have any questions please reach out.  If you are venturing outside this weekend to enjoy the great weather that is supposed to come, please think safety!  Practice social distancing, wash your hands, and wear a mask if you have one available to you.  We want you all to stay safe so that we can continue to flatten the curve and get back to school as soon as possible!

WCDSB Updates:

Distance learning is strong in our community, and while we understand everyone is working at their own pace, teachers are still taking virtual attendance through student/parent activity on the virtual platform and contact with students or families.

Teachers will follow up with a personal phone call or email if we have not heard from you at least once a week to check in, to see if everything is okay and to offer help with any platform learning. Kindly respond to these phone calls or emails as we will continue to call until we are able to reach you.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

As a Catholic system, we have an opportunity to remain connected in our faith, beliefs, and values. During this time, this sense of community and connectedness is even more appreciated.

Even though we are not physically at school we want to continue promoting our sense of togetherness. This will hopefully be achieved through our theme days previously communicated. We also have a beautiful chance to celebrate Catholic Education Week as a system this week.

We recognize the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made. This year’s focus and sub themes are so very relevant.

Catholic Education: Igniting Hope

Day One: Our Hope in Christ

Day Two: The Hope Within Us

Day Three: The Hope Among Us

Day Four: Hope for the World

Day Five: A Future Full of Hope

At Monsignor Haller, we have committed to focusing on these elements. Classroom teachers will be posting pieces to their platforms for students to reflect on. All students will have the opportunity to share what they love about their Catholic school.

Parent resources are also abundant. Please explore this link for a portal of activities, prayers, reflections that can be used at any grade level: https://www.ocsta.on.ca/cew-2020-at-home-resources/

Also a reminder about our WCDSB “Pray@Home” portal on our website:   More authentic supports are housed here: https://wcdsblearnathome.wcdsb.ca/pray-at-home/

Continuing to wish everyone much health and wellness. Anchor yourselves in our faith and maintain a sense of HOPE.
