Device Requests

Good morning Hawks,

A big thank you to the families who completed the Device Survey yesterday and this morning…they keep rolling in!

Because we only have a part time Library Tech all requests will be noted and as many chromes deployed as I can today based on availability.  Devices are signed out to each child by Mrs. Maidment in the library, and are expected to return once we return to the school building.

We will update the list as requests come in, and when Mrs. Maidment returns after the holiday, we will continue to sign chromes out as needed.  Therefore, if your child does not bring home a device today and you requested one, we will be in touch with families over the holidays and on January 4th/5th for a pick up.

Again, at this moment, we are scheduled to return to school on January 4th.  This is a precaution that the Ministry has asked that we prepare for.

Thank you and have a wonderful holiday.

Stay safe Hawks!

Christmas Wishes for the Staff at Monsignor Haller!

Dear Hawks,

As we continue to await the coming of Jesus and look forward to the opportunity to gather with our own families, we also take this occasion to thank our entire community for a wonderful first few months at Monsignor Haller Catholic School.  Although not how we planned to return to school, we have thrived in the face of the pandemic.

We celebrated Advent each day throughout the month of December and will join together virtually this afternoon to celebrate an Advent liturgy together as a school community.  The Waterloo Catholic School Board also welcomed our new Pastoral Plan, “Gathered to Become.”  Students are now heading into their final months of the first term and before you know it we will be heading into first term report cards.

Next week, we hope that you continue to prepare as a family during this Advent season for the coming of Jesus:

And it came to pass, when the angels had departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds were saying to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”  So they went in haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.”  Luke 2: 15-16

We would like to wish each of you and your families the joy and happiness of the Christmas Season!

Stay safe and we hope to see you back at school on Monday January 4th.

Yours in Christ,

Tanya Hunter

Chrome Device Survey

Good afternoon Hawks,

Chromebooks for families who indicated a need on the device survey will be deployed today and tomorrow to students.  These are school chromebooks intended only for learning should we pivot to remote learning in the new year.  These devices are learning tools for school and not meant as a toy or to play games on.  Should we return in January as the Ministry has indicated, then those chromebooks will need to be returned for school use.

If you have not completed the device survey, you can find the information in one of the ways we have communicated it, as well as below:

-email from school messenger

-automated phone message/recording

-newswire

-in your child’s Google Classroom

Thank you

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Hawks,

Principal’s Message:

Our Hawks would like to wish all our families a Merry Christmas!  Each year during Friendship Week in November, students are invited to enter our annual Christmas Card Design Contest.  This year the submissions were outstanding!  Three final creations were selected and are showcased in this year’s Christmas Card (linked for you to enjoy here:   Christmas Card 2020

We hope you enjoy this year’s card and we wish you all a very merry Christmas!

Monsignor Haller would like to send out a HUGE Merry Christmas THANK  YOU to Martin Hickey, the President of the Knights of Columbus, for another year of support!  Martin and the Knights of Columbus have generously donated hundreds of Christmas gifts, just this year alone, to the school to distribute to families who we think could use a little extra support this Christmas season.  Thank you to our parent, Amy P., for the grateful connection and assistance with the delivery – a school bus drop off no less.  Thank you again to the Knights who opened its hearts for those who needed a little extra help this Christmas to bring some joy and hope into their homes.

School News:

Christmas Concert:

Students are excited to view the Christmas with the Hawks compilation in one assembly next Friday where each classroom with be showcased performing a Christmas skit, commercial, dance or chant.  Due to student information & privacy reasons, we will be unable to share the Christmas concert presentation with parents and guardians. We apologize for any confusion.

Terra Cotta & Baden Coffee:

Even in these times of uncertainty, our school community was active in collecting orders for Terra Cotta & Baden Coffee.  Thank you to our supporters, raising almost $2000.00!  Classrooms will be replenished with playdoh – COVID style – each student with their own container and our grade 8’s will be receiving a couple games for their classroom to use during the inclement weather days this season may bring.  Thank you to School Council and Mrs. Neves for organizing this school school council fundraiser!

School Messenger:

You will see an email from Ashley Neves come to you through School Messenger.  Please read the important email regarding chrome devices.  If you DID NOT receive and email, please call Mrs. Neves at the school office: 519-579-1230

Junior Music:

You may have heard that staffing at schools has been a challenge this year as both the public and the Catholic school boards try to staff face to face schools and their virtual schools. Our school in particular has had a challenge filling the music itinerant position that teaches our grade 4, 5,and 6 students music.  The teacher assigned in September went on a leave in October and the school board has been unable to fill this position.  We are pleased to share that Ms. Duffield will be returning to the music position on January 4th.

 WCDSB Updates:

On November 30, the Ontario government launched the Support for Learners program.

Through this program, the government is providing financial support to help parents and guardians with additional costs during the 2020-2021 school year, during the second wave of COVID-19.

Eligible parents or guardians will receive a one-time payment of:

  • $200 for each child up to age 12
  • $250 for each child or youth up to age 21 years with special needs

This is a new program, and all parents or guardians who are residents of Ontario with eligible children will need to submit a new application for each child.

Eligible parents or guardians can go to Ontario.ca/SupportforLearners for more information and to apply for the one-time financial support. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2021.

Support for Learners funding is intended to directly support parents to provide children and youth with key educational resources like workbooks, school supplies, technology and developmental resources during these unprecedented times.

Stay Safe Hawks!
