Merry Christmas

Christmas is coming!  The sights, the sounds and the preparations abound.  As we get ready to celebrate this joyous occasion with family and friends, our lives often become filled with much hustle and bustle, activity and heightened emotion.

Our weekly Advent prayers at school have helped us to focus on and recognize the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people. Christmas reminds us of God’s greatest gift – the birth of His Son Jesus in a Bethlehem stable.

The Staff here at Monsignor Haller would like to wish all of you a very happy and safe Christmas holiday.  See you back at school on Monday January 6th.

Yours in Christ,

Tanya Hunter

As we continue to await the coming of Jesus and look forward to the opportunity to gather with our own families, we also take this occasion to thank our entire community for a wonderful first few months at Monsignor Haller Catholic School.  We have recently celebrated our Advent links with our entire community and we completed our first year of our Pastoral Plan, “Called to Belong”.  Our schools are moving into our new pastoral plan “Gathered to Become”.  Students are now heading into their final months of the first term and before you know it we will be heading into first term report cards.

Outside the classroom learning, our school is fortunate to have a phenomenal Spirit Squad & staff who provide our students with numerous engaging and fun activities that continue to elevate the spirit of our community.  This coming week in particular we will continue with all the Christmas festivities planned.

We have been preparing ourselves during this advent season for the coming of Jesus.  Our community has generously donated an unprecedented amount of donations to the Food Drive and our own staff donated to support Christmas angels in our community as well.  Thank you to everyone for your contributions!

And it came to pass, when the angels had departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds were saying to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”  So they went in haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.  Luke 2: 15-16

We would like to wish each of you and your families the joy and happiness of the Christmas Season!

Grade 8 Nights

Morning Hawks!

If your child is in grade 8 and would like to learn about high school expectations, work ethic and school life at St. Mary’s, there will be two evenings at St. Mary’s in January.

These evenings will offer a one hour session filled with information on not only grade nine but also on pathways through secondary education in general.  So, if your child is unsure of where he/she may land in terms of programming (academic, applied, essential or community living) perhaps this will provide more insight that will carry back to the elementary school level in terms of preparing him/herself.

Students and parents are welcome to attend either evening January 14th or January 20th.

Friday Flash…a look ahead

This Week in the Nest:

On Monday we will come together as a whole school community and share a Christmas Lunch together in the gym.  Thank you to all families who have supported this wonderful opportunity!  Special thanks goes out to School Council who is helping to support our lunch, along with our many volunteers who we will see on Monday helping with the set up, serving, and the clean up.  One of the reasons why I love this school is because we are truly like a family here.

All students should bring a drink/water bottle.  Students who are opting out of the turkey lunch will be reminded to being their lunches with them to eat with their class.

Try These at Home:  “Which One Doesn’t Belong”

These fun activities can be used for all grade levels and topics. The graphics can be specific or more open-ended. Remember, the idea is to spark your child’s thinking, interest, and curiosity to talk about math, and be able to share their reasoning!  WODB activities do not have a single correct answer. These graphics are designed to be interpreted in a variety of different ways in order to spark deep mathematical thinking and discussion.

Director’s Annual Report

Please view the Director’s Annual Report ( https://annual.wcdsb.ca) from Waterloo Catholic DSB.  It is a proud reflection of all of the incredible, inclusive, faith-filled work that characterizes our system day in and day out.  It celebrates our many accomplishments against our articulated goals from our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which was renewed and launched in January of 2019.  It bears witness to our strong relationships with parishes, parents and our community.

We hope you will take a few minutes to journey through the report and to enjoy the many accomplishments of our #WCDSBAwesome staff and students!

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

This Week in the Nest:

A reminder that today is a PD Day.  There is no school for children.

Save the date! Monsignor Haller is proud to present our annual Christmas concert for parents and guests on Friday, December 20. The show will begin at approximately 1:00pm in our school gymnasium and will be around one hour in length. We will post the running order of the performances outside the gymnasium on the day of the concert and doors will open at 12:45pm. To show your support for all of the performers and to avoid disruptions during the show, we ask that you make every effort to stay for the duration of the concert. Our students are so excited to share the Christmas spirit with you on December 20!

Angel Tree

The completion of the Angel Tree campaign will be on Thursday, December 12th.  Thank you for your continued generosity!

Reverse Advent Calendar!

Donations for the following items will be collected each day this week.  Your child will be welcome to come up to the office and place the donation into that day’s food bin.  Thank you for your generosity!

First Term Report Cards:

We are well within the first term this school year and I encourage parents to reach out if you were unable to attend your scheduled conference with your child’s teacher.  A joint partnership between school and home provides that consistent approach to learning that children thrive from.  All children have strengths and areas that they need to show development.  Within our Healthy Schools Framework, we teach stamina, grit and perseverance to get through those challenges—and then we see the pride in a child when they have reached success.   “Opting out” of something a child does not like at school, unfortunately, is not an option!  We encourage, we praise, and we celebrate those efforts Hawks!

This Week in the Nest:

Monday:       Advent Link over the PA.  Ask your child what the link was!

Gingerbread Contest for students in Grades 4-8 who signed up with Mrs. Hunter:)

Every Tuesday:  Spirit Day!  Wear blue, grey and white for a chance to win a prize if your KINDNESS KOUPON is drawn!

Thursday:  Advent Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church 1:15pm.  Please join us if your schedule allows.

Friday:  Tech Exploration in grades 6, 7 & 8 classrooms

Monday Dec. 16:    Monday December 16th is our school turkey lunch!  Thank you to our volunteers who are coming out to help set up, serve food, and clean up!  If you haven’t ordered online yet, please call the office.

School Focus:

Number relationships and fluency; problem solving 2-3 step problems and explaining your thinking.  Advent and Christmas bring many opportunities to practice Math at home. This can include:

  • budgeting for buying gifts,
  • measuring ingredients or adjusting recipes for your family favourite cookies,
  • thinking spatially when wrapping presents,
  • counting lights and ornaments on the tree
  • comparing the number of houses with lights versus the number without on your street
  • or completing fun colouring and arts and crafts ideas

No matter what you are doing with your kids, take some time to explain your thinking and asking them to help with the math will help to develop their mathematical thinking skills.
