Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Hello Hawks!

It is a wet day for our Fiction Festival, but we are excited for the events running today!  Can’t wait to see those costumes!

Our annual School Council SPRING FUNDRAISER will still accept Pepperette orders until Monday -ordered online on schoolcash!  ALL FUNDS GO BACK TO THE CLASSROOMS!  We are hoping to plan a MAD SCIENCE DAY with Scientists in the Schools with the funds raised off of the fundraiser.  Thank you for your support!

This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is “Living as Joyful Disciples.”  May 5-10th, 2019

The 2019 theme was inspired by three sources: Renewing the Promise, The Pastoral Letter on Catholic Education from the Bishops of Ontario; Gaudete et exsultate, the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the Call to Holiness; and Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, the October 2018 Synod of Bishops. Mindful of the Synod on Youth, the theme and sub-themes are very much directed to the young people in our schools, especially in their growth in holiness and their formation as disciples of Christ through the discernment of their vocational pathways. In the section of Renewing the Promise entitled, “A Community that Forms Joyful Disciples,” we read, “Our Catholic schools help to form joyful disciples as hearts and minds are opened to the transforming love of God and to the flame of faith in action. On a daily basis, Catholic schools demonstrate the joy of believing and witness the Good News to the communities that they serve.”

There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:

Day 1: Rooted in Prayer

Day 2: Living in Community

Day 3: Doing Justice & Creating Hope

Day 4: Journeying Together in Faith

Day 5: Sharing the Good News

Learning Commons Mural

Hawks!

If you have not been into the school in the past two weeks, you will not have seen the amazing mural that is being painted in our learning commons (library).  Our talented artist (Sarah Brenner) is working on another wall and we hope to see it completed next week.  Thank you to the Catholic Community Foundation for their grant to allow us to pay for this work.

The pictures painted depict the ideas and voices from our students along with our school themes and languages spoken!

Enjoy the before, during and after pictures attached.

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Blessings Haller Hawk Families,

This week marks the most incredible week of the year for Catholics all around the world ~ Holy Week!  What an emotional week this will be: beginning with the preparation of Holy Thursday, the deep despair of Good Friday, the moments of waiting through Saturday and the joyous explosion of Easter Sunday.

We travel together, as Christians, through this week, learning from Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection that new life can spring forth from death, we can find meaning in tough times and there really is a light calling us through times of great darkness. Bring Holy Week to life within your own lives!

Thank you to Miss Steven’s and Mrs. Mikuljan’s classes for preparing our hearts for Easter with the Stations of the Cross presentation this coming week.  Mrs. Gaiger and Mrs. Rutledge’s classes will be helping to lead our Easter Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday May 7th.  Mass is at 10:15 am, please join us for mass if you are able.

Families:  School Council is pleased to bring back our annual SPRING FUNDRAISER asking families for support with our MAD SCIENCE DAY through the purchase of Vesey Bulbs and/or Stemmler’s Pepperettes.

Packages were sent home this past week.  Please ask your child to show it to you and ask friends, family or neighbours if they are interested in bulbs or Pepperettes.

The fundraiser will run until April 23rd.  Vesey’s can be ordered online on schoolcash!

Thank you for your support!

Reminder:  A reminder that the school parking lot is closed from 8:15am-4:00pm each day.  The parking spots are reserved for staff only.  Parents/grandparents may not drop off or pick up as these are our busiest times with kids walking across the sidewalk and through the lot.  Moving vehicles create an extremely unsafe environment for our children. Parking is available on Shea and Laurentian.

This Week in the Nest:

Monday:  Grade 4 trip to the Safety Village (pm)!

Tuesday:  Spirit Day! Get Your Ticket Assembly!  You need to wear spirit wear/colours for a chance to win!

Thursday:     Holy Thursday Stations of the Cross Celebration (lead by the students in Miss Steven’s and Mrs. Mikuljan’s classes)

Friday: Good Friday

School Focus: Mathematics

Problem Solving:

  1. How can you add eight 8’s to get the number 1,000? (only use addition)
  2. Can you find four consecutive prime numbers that add up to 220 ?
  3. When asked how old she was, Sarah replied, ‘In 2 years I will be twice as old as I was five years ago.’ How old is she?

New Mural in our Learning Commons!

We are excited to share that we are about to showcase a new mural for our Learning Commons beginning next week (hopefully!).

This mural will be similar to the front foyer mural and depict our Catholic faith and love of reading at Monsignor Haller.  Sarah Brenner is the artist who will be working with acrylic paints through the days and nights for about 2 weeks.

The work is being paid for by a grant that was applied for and approved by the Catholic Community Foundation.

Thank you to the Catholic Community Foundation!!
