Weekly Update May 27-31

Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, with special recognition dedicated to National Indigenous Peoples Day, which falls on June 21st. On this day and throughout June, we celebrate the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, their vibrant and distinct cultures, and their beautiful languages. This is an opportunity for Canadians to learn about the history of Indigenous Peoples, and further embrace the opportunity to learn more about their identities. For our classrooms, students will be learning about Indigenous perspectives on treaties, Indigenous leadership, resistance, resurgence, brilliance, and creativity.  You can read more HERE

June is also designated as Pride Month in Canada, and on Saturday, June 1st, we will join other schools across our district in raising the Pride (Rainbow) flag outside of our school building. The Rainbow flag will fly for June as a visible symbol of our commitment to nurturing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment where every student and every member of the community is valued, and respected.

Time for Students to Return Things

Parents we ask that you continue to check closets, trunks, under beds, etc. for any schoolbooks that may be hiding and return them to us as soon as possible. The more we receive back, the fewer we have to replace. By working together to locate missing textbooks and library books, we are able to responsibly minimize costs to the school.  All library books are due back Friday, June 7th so that we can conduct an inventory.  Thank you.

Registration for SPRING/SUMMER Starts in APRIL 2023 for our FREE CPF Virtual French Programs. Stay tuned for the April announcement that Registration is open.

New Attendance Management System Starting June 5!

SafeArrival for Families FAQ

What is SafeArrival?

SafeArrival is an absence management system that improves student safety and makes it easy for you to let the school know about your child’s absence.

You are asked to report your child’s absence in advance whenever possible using one of these convenient methods:

SchoolMessenger app (free)

  • Please use the email address that you provided to the school
  • Get the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca).
  • Tap Sign Up to create your account.
  • Select Attendance from the menu, and then select Report an Absence.

Web and Mobile Web: go.schoolmessenger.ca

  • Please use the email address that you provided to the school
  • Go to the website.
  • Click Sign Up to create your account.
  • Select Attendance from the menu, then select Report an Absence.

Interactive Toll-free Phone 1-833-251-3283

  • Call the toll-free, interactive telephone system.
  • Follow the instructions to report an absence.

Absences can be reported in advance:

  • 24 hours/day
  • 7 days a week
  • For any school day in the school term
  • Up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence.

Whenever an absence is reported or updated, you will receive a confirmation notice by email and/or text message (assuming you have provided your contact information to the school).

If you don’t report your child’s absence in advance, the automated notification system will try to contact you (using your communication preferences if you have set them up in the SchoolMessenger app). This may include push notifications to the app, email, SMS text messages, or phone calls. You will be asked to provide the reason for your child’s absence immediately. You may do so using the phone line, website or mobile app.

If an absence is not explained within approximately 20 minutes of the time that the school starts the notification process, school staff will follow up to make sure that your child is safe. If you try to explain an absence using SafeArrival, but are then told that it is past the cut-off time, please contact the school directly.

If you don’t want to receive notifications when your child is absent, be sure to report your child’s absence in advance.

If you do receive notifications of your child’s absence, be sure to provide the reason as quickly as possible, using one of the methods listed above or during the phone call notification itself.

Why do I Need a SchoolMessenger App Account?

A SchoolMessenger app account is not required to use the toll-free phone line to report absences. However, we strongly recommend that you provide your email address to the school and set up your SchoolMessenger app account. This allows you to review and update absences, review your contact information and communication preferences and more.

Please see related SchoolMessenger app documentation for setting up your account, resetting your password, reviewing contact information, and specifying communication preferences. Once you have set up your account, choose ATTENDANCE from the menu.

If you cannot set up your account, you do not see the ATTENDANCE option, or you do not see your child(ren) listed in your account, please contact the school directly to check that your correct email address is associated with your child(ren).

How do I use the Toll-Free 1-833-251-3283 Phone Line?

When you call the toll-free phone line, follow the instructions for reporting an absence.

If the phone number you are calling from matches a phone number on file with the school for your student(s), you will hear your student’(s) name(s). If the system doesn’t recognize your caller ID, you will be asked to enter the student’s home phone number.

If you have difficulty using the toll-free phone line, please consider using the SchoolMessenger mobile app or website. Otherwise, contact the school directly.

SafeArrival – New Management System – FAQ’s, Information Videos and More

As we have communicated previously, there will be a new attendance management system being implemented as of Wednesday, June 5th, 2024.  To help with this transition, please find to follow helpful information to answer any questions.

With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these 3 convenient methods:

  1.  Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the link at SchoolMessenger).
    2.    The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
    3.    Use the SafeArrival website, SchoolMessenger. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
    4.    Call the toll-free number 1-833-251-3283 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.  Future absences can be reported at any time.

In addition, we will use the SchoolMessenger Communicate automated notification system to contact parents whose child is absent when the absence was not reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact parents at multiple contact points until a reason is submitted for the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, office staff will follow up.   This means calling the school and sending emails will no longer be an option.

If you report your child’s absence in advance using the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or mobile app, you will NOT receive these notifications.

Starting Wednesday, June 5th, 2024 please report absences in advance using SafeArrival instead of sending notes or calling/emailing the school.

Students are also reminded that we are guests of St. David’s CSS. We are so excited for our annual Track and Field meet and look forward to a great day of community building with our Hawk Team!

Math at Home Survey

Dear Families,

Schools offer a variety of opportunities for parents to learn more about how to support their children: for example, events related to mathematics may be held at the school (e.g., family math nights); teachers may provide newsletters or communicate with parents through apps or social media; and school or board websites may provide helpful tips about how parents can engage in their child’s mathematics learning outside of school and may even provide links where they can learn more or enjoy math activities together.

The following brief survey will assist our school district in gathering data about how parents/families feel in terms of being informed about what their children are learning in math, how parents/families feel about supporting their children’s learning in math, and about parental access to math learning resources at home.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation.

EQAO Assessments in Grades 3 and 6

This year, we are once again following Ministry’s direction to administer the assessment from the Education Quality and Accountability Office for all Grade 3 and 6 students. Both our Grade 3 and 6 students will be writing a sample test in May to help our students familiarize themselves with the questions and online platform.  The actual assessment for Grade 3 students will take place from May 27th – May 30th and for Grade 6 students June 3rd – June 7th.  EQAO has created a short video for parents and guardians of primary- and junior-division students participating in the assessments.

Math @ Home May Issue

Parents can make a big difference in their child’s learning by talking with them about what they are learning at school. While these resources are optional, they provide valuable information about what students are learning at school and ideas for supporting their learning at home.  Please click HERE for ways to have fun with math at home!
