March 25th update

This week is Holy Week, a time to pray and reflect on Jesus’ suffering, sacrifice, and victory over death.  It starts on Palm Sunday (yesterday), a day that commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. At mass we received palms, a reminder of the Scripture telling us that people welcomed Jesus by laying down their cloaks and waving palm branches.

Holy Week includes solemn observances and joyous feasts. Holy Thursday begins the Easter Triduum – the three days leading up to Jesus’ Resurrection.  We learn of the Lord’s Supper, which was the first celebration of the Eucharist.

Good Friday is the only day in the entire year in which no Mass is celebrated. It is a solemn day that calls for fasting and abstinence. Stations of the Cross are often reenacted in church on Good Friday.

Holy Saturday is the Easter Vigil and is perhaps the most important liturgy of the year. It begins the Easter celebrations and begins once the sun has set. The Liturgy of the Word begins in darkness and demonstrates the connection between the Old and new Testaments and how Jesu fulfilled Scripture and achieved salvation of all humanity. The Easter Vigil is a joyous, celebratory liturgy.

Easter Sunday is a festive Liturgy, and which continues from the Easter Vigil. Often we celebrate this day with beautiful flowers like white lilies, wear special outfits and of course eat chocolate.

Throughout this week, students will have the opportunity to participate in activities and discussions in their classrooms. These activities will focus on themes such as love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and renewal, which are central to the message of Lent and Easter.  On Holy Thursday, we will come together as a school community to watch a presentation of the Stations of the Cross, led by Ms. Rocco’s and Ms. Segato’s classes. This solemn and reverent experience will allow students to journey alongside Jesus as he carries the cross, reflecting on each station.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Good Friday, March 29th, or Easter Monday, April 1st.

Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) – Suspension Date is March 27th

As required by Ontario’s Immunization of Schools Pupil Act, Public Health must have a complete record of required vaccines, or a valid exemption on file, for every student attending schools in the region. The ISPA is a law and requires parents/guardians to report child immunizations to the Region of Waterloo Public Health, not to the school or school board. Parents/Guardians of students at Monsignor Haller whose immunization records were not up to date received a letter from the Region of Waterloo Public Health. If Public Health does not have the required records as of March 27th, your child will be suspended from school. The school/school board does not issue suspension orders and cannot cancel a suspension order. Parents/Guardians of students who have been suspended are required to provide the Region of Waterloo Public Health with records for missing immunizations and/or a valid exemption.  For more information, please visit Region of Waterloo Public Health ISPA .

Lost and Found Items

With the warmer weather here, many students have left their coats, hats, and mitts on the yard. They have been collected and placed in the Lost & Found for students to pick up (3 tables worth). If you child is missing any items, please have them check the lost and found as items will be donated at the end of the week.

Have an amazing week Hawks!

Dental Screening at Monsignor Haller

Dear Families,

In 10 days, Region of Waterloo Public Health and Paramedic Services will be offering a dental screening program at our school.

Who will be screened?
All JK, SK and Grade 2 students at our school will be screened (as well as other select students as appropriate).

What is a dental screening?
Dental screenings are a quick look in your child’s mouth to check for any urgent dental concerns. A Registered Dental Hygienist performs this visual check using a single-use, sterilized mouth mirror (one per child). This screening does not replace your child’s regular visit with a dentist. Each participating student will be sent home at the end of the screening day(s)
with a confidential result letter in a closed envelope.

Why is a dental screening important?
The dental screening is a provincially required program under the Ontario Public Health Standards that aims to ensure all children receive equal access to dental care across Ontario.

How can I opt in or opt out from the dental screening?
 If your child is in one of the grades listed above, they will be screened.

Please complete this form www.regionofwaterloo.ca/dentalopting or call 519-575-4400 ext. 5010 if;
 If you do not want your child to be screened or;
 If your child is not in one of the grades listed and you would like them to be screened

*Please note parents/guardians must notify the Public Health dental program each year if they
do not want their children to participate in the dental screening program.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our dental team at 519-575-4400 ext. 5010 or through email at dentalprogram@regionofwaterloo.ca. For information on our available
dental programs, please visit our website www.regionofwaterloo.ca/dentalhealth.

Sincerely,
Region of Waterloo Public Health and Paramedic Services

Personal Property

At times, students bring personal belongings to the school (electronic devices, footballs, hats, ball gloves, knapsacks, special clothing).  They are responsible for these possessions.  Their names should be clearly labelled on these articles.  Please note that the school is not responsible for the loss of personal items.  If a child has lost or misplaced an article of clothing, please have them check the Lost and Found area. We also ask that the children NOT bring anything to school that has monetary or sentimental value.

Student Achievement and Spring Testing

Below are the three tests that will take place this spring:
GRADE 4’s – CANADIAN COGNITIVE ACHIEVEMENT TEST (CCAT) – March 20- 27, 2024
In the period of March 20- 27, 2024, the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test Level 10 (CCAT 7) will be administered to all grade 4 students in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board.  The purpose of this board-wide screening of the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test Level 10 (CCAT 7) is to:
  1. Identify your child’s cognitive areas of strength and areas of need
  2. Provide information about your child’s learning style
  3. Provide information to your child’s teachers in order to help them meet instructional objectives
The CCAT 7 is divided into three sections (verbal, quantitative, non-verbal) and each section has three tests. The CCAT 7 will be administered over a three-day period and each testing session will last about 40 – 45 minutes out of the regular school day.  If you do not wish for your child to participate in this assessment, please inform your school principal no later than March 8, 2024.
GRADE 7—CAT-4 (CANADIAN ACHIEVEMENT TEST)  –  April 10-17, 2024
Students in Grade 7 in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board will be administered the Canadian Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (CAT-4) between April 10 – 17, 2024.  The CAT-4 is a national standardized achievement test designed to measure achievement in the basic skills commonly taught in schools across Canada. The specific skill areas in which your child will be assessed include language arts, reading and mathematics. The CAT-4 takes approximately four hours to complete over a three-day period.  The CAT-4 will provide information for parents, students, teachers and administrators about how well students perform in the basic skill areas. This information will be used to provide direction for curriculum and program delivery at the system, school, and individual student levels.  If you wish your child to not participate in the testing, please contact your child’s school principal by March 8, 2024.
EQAO TESTING – Primary and Junior Assessments in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics:
This year’s cohorts of Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will participate in the Primary and Junior EQAO testing during the period of  Wednesday, May 8, to Monday, June 17, 2024.  Please mark your calendars and avoid booking appointments on these dates, if at all possible, to avoid interruptions during these testing dates.

March Break is just around the corner.  We have an extra day added on to the March Break week this year, so students officially begin their March Break on Friday, March 8th.  Students are due to return back to school on Monday, March 18th.
Have a fabulous weekend Hawks!
