September 27th Update

School Council:

Monsignor Haller school will be holding the first 2023-2024 School Council meeting on Tuesday, October 3rd in the Learning Commons.  The meeting will start at 6:00 pm and end at 7:00 pm.  All parents and guardians of students are welcome to attend. At this first meeting we will hold council elections and discuss the purpose and role of the Council.

Boomerang Lunches:

In our continued efforts to reduce our waste and be more environmentally conscious we will be having Boomerang Lunch Days. Our Boomerang Lunch Days will take place on the last Friday of each month. This Friday September 29 will be our first one! This means all snack/lunch garbage, recycling and waste will return home with your child. Please try to ensure your child brings their snacks and lunch to school in reusable containers. Thank you for your continued support!

Truth and Reconciliation Week: Remembering the Children

“We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished, and protected…” – Pope Francis

September 25- 30th is “Truth and Reconciliation Week where schools across Canada will be engaging in age-appropriate educational activ

ities to raise awareness of the residential school system and how its legacy affected Indigenous Peoples and shaped the country we live in today. Truth and Reconciliation Week was launched by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and will culminate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) on September 30th. It serves as an an

nual time to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools.  The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmo

ther for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at a residential school. This day is an acknowledgment of Canada’s past and time to hold hope for a future where Every Child Matters.

At school, we will continue to pass along the message that on September 30th — and every day —every child matters.  Since September 30th is a Saturday, we will be wearing orange on Friday, September 29th.  As a school, we look forward to engaging our students in meaningful reconciliati

on and learning about Canada’s history of colonization, thinking creatively about the future, and continuing to provide them with opportunities to make a difference.

Nutrition For Learning:

Once again, our school has partnered with Nutrition for Learning, a registered charitable organization, to provide our students with a nutritious breakfast snack program, following the nutritional criteria of Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services; Ministry of Education PPM150, Canada Public Health and the Catholic School Food Policy.  The purpose of providing a universal nutritional program is to ensure our students are well nourished and ready to learn throughout the school day. Being part of this program has many benefits for all students. Research has proven that students coming to school hungry do not perform well in the classroom, have difficulty concentrating, may display behavioural problems, are less alert and are often lethargic. This program impacts children’s overall ability to learn successfully. Food will be delivered to the school weekly by order, and then distributed and topped up weekly to each classroom for students to take one or two food items when hungry (helps with those forgotten lunches too!).

Professional Activity Day is Coming Up

Friday, October 6th, 2023 is a Professional Activity (PA) Day. There is no school for students on this day

Supervision:

Supervision begins at 8:35 am. For the safety of your children, we request that your child NOT be on school property until a supervisor is on duty.  For safety, please ensure that your children leave home with ample time to ensure that they are in the schoolyard when the bell rings. Encourage your children to use appropriate crosswalks and walkways. Establish routines at home that will assist your child to arrive on time. For safety reasons, students are only permitted on the blacktop. If your child arrives late, they are asked to report to the office to check in. Thank you for your support!

Emergency Protocols:

As is typical to the start of the school year, staff have reviewed safety protocols with our students to ensure their safety in the event of an emergency. We have practiced fire drills and will also have a practice lock down and tornado drills. While we emphasize to our students that these are practices, it important that they take them seriously as a necessary precaution.  We have already completed two fire drills and our students were amazing and exited the school in a quick and orderly manner.  Way to go Hawks!!

Lunches and Snacks must be NUT FREE PLEASE:

We are a nut-free environment. We have students with life-threatening allergies to nuts and other allergens. Nut-alternative products are also not permitted, this includes products like Nutella and Wowbutter.  Thank you.

Strong Start:

We are looking for volunteers to support our Strong Start program. If you are interested, please visit www.strongstart.ca for details

Welcome Back to School

Hello Monsignor Haller Hawks and happy Friday!  We hope you had a fantastic Summer and are looking forward to a new, exciting year of learning.

With our growing population, our school has added two new portables. Mr. Doak has been busy adding new furniture to these classrooms and cleaning the school so were ready to welcome our students back. THANK YOU SO MUCH Mr. Doak!

Another big thanks needs to be said to the teachers of Monsignor Haller who have been organizing their classrooms and preparing for our students return. We appreciate all the work they put in.

And finally, we would like to thank Mrs. Bridge for all the behind-the-scenes paperwork and computer work they have to do to make sure our school year starts up smoothly.

Class lists:

To support our transition back to school, families will be receiving classroom teacher information on Friday, September 1st (5 pm) through SchoolCash online. Please know that class lists continue to be tentative due to ongoing registrations which impact enrollment and staffing. Staffing and classroom changes will be directed by the Board Office and may occur during the first two weeks of school. Our staff takes great care in considering students’ needs when creating class placements. Every effort is made to see that classes are balanced and to take into consideration the students social, emotional and academic wellbeing. Together as partners in education, we can ensure a positive start-up for our Hawk students.

Office Open

The school office officially opened on Tuesday, August 29th. If you are in the registration process, please make sure that all forms are completed online, and all necessary documents are uploaded.  If you are uncertain of the status of your child’s registration, please do not hesitate to contact the main office 519-579-1230. • Please note it takes time to add/change students to routes, so please check as soon as possible.
  • Please remember that all Kindergarten students must be met by a parent/guardian when transitioning from the bus.

Sleep:

School success means a healthy daily routine. Now is the time to start getting back on track with normal sleep hours.  Put down the electronics, get to sleep and be refreshed for great days at school.

Attendance:

School success is directly linked to regular attendance. We can’t wait to see you.

Phones:

Phones should stay at home during the school day. Phones are not to be used at school during the regular day, in class or on the yard. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged phones. Phones are a constant distraction from learning and create far too many social issues for schools to manage. Please review this with your children so phones do not become a problem at school. Phones will be confiscated if used at recess or during the instructional day and parent will be required to pick them up.

Behaviour:

Being “school ready”, does not just apply to academics, but also our choices, conduct and behaviour. Elementary schools are professional places of work where everyone, students, and staff, are treated with dignity and respect.

Please take some time now to talk with your children about their behaviour and choices.

Be nice.

That’s it!

We all know how to be nice; it is not hard to do. If we all make the effort to be nice then everyone can have a great day. And everyone has the right to a great day.

Sometimes though, we may not get along. The only strategies we have to solve problems are….

Words,

Walk,

Report!

At. Monsignor Haller school we solve our problems with words, and we use kind words (kids and adults).

We keep our hands to ourselves at all times. When words are not working, we walk away.

When an issue or problem is serious, we report it to the grown-ups so that school staff can help.

If we all review with our children how to be nice to others and respect school staff at all times – great things are possible.

We are a community. We are a team. We all have to work together and journey together for all the children in our school to be successful.

Let’s get off to positive start and make this year of school the best it can. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 5th.

Thank You Parents

Thank you, parents, for sending and entrusting your children to Monsignor Haller School for the 2023-24 school year.  We look forward to a wonderful school year with your child(ren).

Gary Litschgy (Principal) and Monsignor Haller School Staff
